Gig workers are coming together and making huge steps towards a fairer and safer...
TWU members have gained significant ground against gig platforms’ automated, anti-worker processes, with huge Fair Work Commission wins and a growing membership making us world leaders in this space.
Following the Albanese’ government’s unfair deactivation provisions coming into effect, the TWU got straight to work taking these cases to the Fair Work Commission.
With landmark wins, we’ve already seen platforms like Uber changing their behaviour:
Mohammad Hotak was assaulted by passengers, then kicked off the app by Uber instead of being offered support.
His case was the first win in the Fair Work Commission, a huge, world-leading precedent in this space.
Umair Ayyub received only 9 thumbs down out of over 700 deliveries – most of them without a reason given. But he was kicked off the app by Uber.
In a huge win on appeal, the Fair Work Commission found that he’d never had a defective order in almost 6,000 deliveries.
It called Uber’s rating system “illogical and arbitrary” – a huge win in our fight against gig platform’s algorithmic management of people’s lives and livelihoods.
With historic applications underway to increase pay and conditions in food delivery, rideshare and parcel delivery, we’re leading the world. But we need as many people in the TWU as possible to keep winning.
