National vigils for workers killed at Cleanaway

Standards in waste have dropped so low that workers are being killed at companies like Cleanaway.

At Cleanaway sites around the country, the TWU will conduct vigils to remember the workers killed at the company, with a staggering five deaths in the last two years, and eight since mid-2022, as part of Workers’ Memorial Day.

These workers’ deaths are not only tragic, they are a safety crisis. Meanwhile, last year CEO Mark Schubert walked away with an eye-watering $4.2 million. We’ve put Cleanaway on notice: if it refuses to lift safety and standards we will force it to.

Recently TWU safety blitzes at Cleanaway found huge issues:

At Cleanaway’s AGM last year, 40% voted against executive pay over “deteriorating safety performance and lack of appropriate accountability.”

With bargains commencing at Cleanaway around the country this year, thousands of waste workers will have the potential right to take protected industrial action this year if the company refuses to lift its deadly standards.

Now it’s time to ramp up our fight for safety, fair pay and conditions at Cleanaway.
