A message from Tony Sheldon
Five Point Plan to Secure the Future

tony sheldon

1. Growing the Union

  • We will build upon the power of existing TWU state branches through nationally coordinated wage and recruitment campaigns.
  • We will continue to develop our partnerships with international trade unions to campaign against global companies exploiting transport workers and their families in Australia.

2. Fair playing fields in the transport industry

  • We will establish a national safety net for transport workers by working to implement the Chain of Responsibility (COR) legislation in every Australian State and Territory.

The COR creates greater client and workplace accountability in the transport industry and aims to abolish low unsafe pay rates, dangerous driving hours, and unsafe outsourcing (for example, the use of labour hire companies at airports).

  • Furthermore, the TWU will call for an urgent Federal Government inquiry into instances where transport companies are breaching safety regulations and bowing to client pressure.

3. Fair Fuel

  • We must stop the Federal Government double taxing petrol. The TWU wants greater, simpler tax rebates for transport workers and the GST removed from fuel.

4. Securing Members Entitlements

  • We will continue to fight to protect our members’ jobs, workplace conditions, and accrued entitlements. Our legal team will continue to secure our member’s wages and ‘nest-eggs’.
  • We oppose Australian companies exploiting overseas workers and removing job opportunities for working Australians.

5. Safety

We will establish Union, Government and Employer coordinated safety inductions for all workers at all work sites.

  • We must stop deaths on our roads
  • We must stop airline industry staff being put at risk because of poor Federal Government airport security measures
  • We must stop physical assaults on our public transport workforce.

The TWU refuses to stand by and allow the next generation of transport workers and their families be worse off.

No matter where the fight is in this country, we will be there, stronger than ever.

And we will be fighting to win – because this is about securing the future of our members and their families.

If you have an issue of concern please contact the TWU on 02 9912 0788 or by email.
