Our Structure and Rules
Our Structure and Rules
The TWU is an organisation, which is registered under the Workplace Relations Act The Act sets out strict laws which govern the way a union can operate. The TWU is obliged to have rules that have been approved by the Australian Industrial Registry, an organisation set up by Parliament to manage unions and employer organisations. The TWU rules set out the structure of the union as follows:
Federal Council
Federal Council is the supreme body within the union structure. The Federal Council consists of the Federal Secretary, each Branch Secretary, and a number of extra Federal Councillors from each branch depending on the number of members in each branch.
Federal Committee of Management
The Federal Committee of Management (FCOM) consists of the Federal Secretary, the Assistant Secretary and each Branch Secretary. The positions of Federal President and Federal Vice President are elected by Federal Council on an annual basis, and also are part of the Federal Committee of Management. The Federal Committee of Management has most of the powers of Federal Council, other than when Federal Council is sitting.
Branch Structure
Each branch has a Branch Committee of Management (BCOM) consisting of a Branch President, Vice President, Secretary, two Trustees, and between seven and 11 members.
Copies of the Rules of the TWU can be obtained from each branch of the Union. Telephone 02 9912 0788 or email twu@twu.com.au for a copy.
