Transport Workers Union of Australia Campaign 2007

Secure Your Future

The 2007 Secure the Future campaign is YOUR campaign, so it’s important you get involved and have your say.

Thousands of Transport Workers’ Union members have stood together and asked not only for a wage increase, but safe conditions of work, an independent industrial umpire, the right to be organised and job security is protected in the 2007 claim.

The Howard Federal government is trying very hard to tear up workers’ rights under WorkChoices – but the TWU has proved it can fight, and win!

It’s important that under the harshest industrial relations laws in more than a century that we continue to stand
together and fight.

Over the last three months thousands of TWU members across transport, distribution, waste and milk industries have responded to surveys to determine the most important issues for the 2007 Claim.

The results of those surveys overwhelmingly indicate the most important issues for TWU members.

TWU Claim 2007 - Summary

• No trade-offs
The new agreement will only build on the terms and conditions of your current agreement.

• Strong and Enforceable Safety
NSW Safety: The company will remain in the superior and stronger NSW Workers’ Compensation and Occupational Health and Safety systems.

Chain of Responsibility:
Improved Chain of Responsibility provisions make sure that your competition can’t compete unfairly and that companies and clients pushing TWU members over the edge can be held accountable.

Industry: TWU members want their companies to contribute to an industry training fund for training, education and industrial rights training to help make sure your competition is not undercutting your rates and taking potentially fatal short cuts on safety.

• Protection of the Independent Umpire
NSW IRC: The right to have all disputes conciliated and arbitrated by the Independent Umpire – the NSW Industrial Relations Commission.

• Union Rights
Delegates: Recognition and protection of the role and right of TWU delegates, co-delegates and active TWU members – to represent members, hold
members meetings, communicate with members and to be trained in the latest OH&S requirements and organising techniques.

Right of Entry: Entry to worksites by TWU organisers to represent members, investigate OH&S and industrial breaches, communicate with members and non members and organise workers.

Inductions: Paid on-site TWU inductions of all employees, new and existing, owner drivers and labour hire workers

• Job Security
Entitlements: 100% Entitlements protection provisions requires your boss to set aside 100% of your hard earned entitlements in either a bank guarantee, insurance policy or cash trust account, to protect you in case of company collapse, competitive takeover or forced redundancy.

No AWA’s: The company will not enter into individual contracts, AWA’s or non-union agreements

• Training
Bluecard: The company shall provide Blue Card training to all workers – an OH&S and an industrial rights skills passport.

OH&S: Regular and current OH&S training for all TWU Delegates, Co-delegates, OH&S committee members and activists. Employer contributed agreements to fund campaigns dedicated to training members, and industries in industrial rights.

• Leave
Blood Donor: Paid blood donor leave

Volunteer: Paid volunteer emergency/bushfire brigade service leave

Defence: Paid defence force services leave

Parental: 14 weeks paid parental leave for the primary care giver

• Increase to Wages
TWU members demand at least a 4% pay increase for each year of the agreement

• Increase to Super
PLUS an additional 1% extra employer super contribution for all employees, contractors, labour hire and outside hire workers covered by the agreement.

From these results the TWU Claim has been prepared in consultation with your TWU delegates and negotiating committee members. Building on your last claim, it aims to deliver even more strength to TWU members and their families.
