Joe Hockey puts banks before families

Six weeks have passed since the collapse of Trucking Company McArthur Express. It has been a long hard struggle for the employees and Owner-drivers of the failed company. Many employees who put their paperwork in weeks ago have still not received their payment

Brian Milson, ex-employee of McArthur Express is married and has two young children said “I thought this was meant to me an emergency payment. I put my paperwork in weeks ago have not received anything. I’m glad Joe Hockey isn’t in charge of the SES.”

For the Owner-drivers of McArthur Express the situation is getting desperate. The Federal government is still refusing to bring Owner-drivers under the GEERS scheme to ensure that they get access to some of their entitlements.

National Secretary of the Transport Workers’ Union Tony Sheldon said “by refusing to allow the Owner-drivers of McArthur Express access to the GEERS scheme Joe Hockey is forcing these families to line up behind creditors like Westpac.

“Joe Hockey is putting banks before families.

“All we are asking is for Joe Hockey to do what is within his powers, that is, give Owner-drivers access to the GEERS scheme. Without access to GEERS scheme Owner-drivers and their families will receive nothing,” said Tony Sheldon.

Owner Driver Fikre Zegergish said “Joe Hockey is putting Westpac ahead of my small business. I thought Liberals supported small businesses and working families. Clearly they don't.”
