SAFE SKIES, NOT MORE LIES
“More alarming reports have emerged today that the Office of Transport Security, ASIO and the Australian Crime Commission are still calling on the Government to fix air security dangers.
“This is not the first time the Government has been warned of these problems,” said Labor’s spokesperson on Homeland Security Arch Bevis.
“When Sir John Wheeler conducted his review in 2005, he highlighted serious problems in aviation and airport security.
“When Labor called for the problems noted by Wheeler to be fixed, the Government misled Australia by saying they had implemented all of the recommendations.
“Wheeler recommended that the screening of cargo be expanded and include mandatory screening of all cargo on passenger aircraft where passengers’ checked baggage is screened.
“The review also warned on the vulnerability of current arrangements on regular regional aircraft arriving at major airports such as Sydney.
“The Government has again failed to follow expert advice.
“The Howard Government is wrong, and too cunning by half, to claim to have fixed all the aviation dangers noted by Wheeler.
“As the high profile APEC summit approaches, we need safe skies, not more lies,” said Mr Bevis today. Hon. Arch Bevis MP
