Why do we need 600 new WorkChoices
policemen if IR laws are 'fair'
If the Government's industrial relations laws were really 'fair' to working families why does the Howard Government need to employ the 600 new Workchoices policemen it announced in Federal Parliament yesterday.
ACTU President Sharan Burrow said today:
"The Howard Government has announced it will spend another $370 million of taxpayers' money and employ an extra 600 Workchoices officials in an attempt to stop workers being ripped off under their industrial relations laws.
Throwing 600 new Workchoices policemen and millions of dollars of taxpayers' money at these fundamentally unfair IR laws won't fix the problems with Workchoices.
You cannot put a band aid on fundamentally unfair laws.
The Government's latest changes will not restore workers' right to protection from unfair dismissal.
They will not guarantee any negotiation over work conditions like overtime, public holiday pay and penalty rates will result in employees being financially better off than they would have been under their award.
And they will not protect working families' access to paid maternity leave, control over rosters, redundancy pay or rest breaks.
The Government's latest cosmetic changes will not fix the fundamentally flawed Workchoices industrial relations laws," said Ms Burrow.
