TWU BACKS GREG COMBET IN NEW ROLE
National Secretary of the Transport Worker’s Union, Tony Sheldon, is proud to be able to call Greg Combet a mate and wishes him all the best as he starts his career as the Australian Labor candidate for Charlton
“Greg has battled for working Australian families from his early days at the Maritime Union, and hasn’t let up as he takes on the Howard government’s WorkChoices” said Mr Sheldon.
”Whether you’re in a union or not – Greg has always put the interests of working Australian families first – and I know he’ll seek a better deal and a fairer way of life for all Australians.
”Greg was the driving force in seeking a fair go for thousands of wharfies in the 1998 waterfront dispute – which was one of the most vicious attacks on working rights from the Howard government.
“He was instrumental in securing the first entitlements for Ansett workers - his vision for a fairer Australia led to the first major steps to a national entitlement scheme across the Australian community.” said Mr Sheldon.
”He also spent six years campaigning for compensation for James Hardie asbestos victims, securing a fund of 4.5 billion dollars – a result which they couldn’t have achieved without Greg’s leadership and passion for rights for working families.
“Gutsy action by Greg has led to a better way of life for millions of Australians. Greg’s views will fit into the broad church of views which is Australian Labor, and I feel confident knowing he’ll continue to put the rights of Aussie families’ first.” said Mr Sheldon.
