The Transport Workers Union has welcomed this morning’s historic caucus announcement, which confirmed Julia Gillard as Australia’s first female Prime Minister.

Transport Workers Union national secretary, Tony Sheldon, said that in his dealings with Ms Gillard as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Workplace Relations, he has always found her honest, frank, intelligent and determined.

“Julia Gillard has been working hard for Australian families, including truck drivers, and by demolishing WorkChoices she has restored a system of fairness to employment conditions in Australia,” Mr Sheldon said.

“She has also made some of the most landmark decisions in favour of the trucking industry, the most dangerous industry in Australia, and is bringing all parties, including clients, transport companies and drivers, together for landmark reforms.

“Just last Sunday Ms Gillard re-affirmed he commitment to the industry, saying “There is clearly a compelling case evolving for an independent assessment of what constitutes a ‘safe rate’ for the transport industry.

“By preventing Tony Abbott from becoming the next Prime Minister and reintroducing Workchoices with a new name, Julia Gillard has what it takes to lead all Australians into a new period of prosperity,” Mr Sheldon said.
