The Transport Workers Union of Australia (TWU) will today appear before the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Australian Crime Commission (ACC) inquiry into organized crime.

TWU national secretary, Tony Sheldon, and TWU national airport official, Scott Connelly, will make a presentation to the Joint Committee this afternoon.

Testimony will be given to the Committee regarding outsourcing, contracting and labour hire work, and alleged security breaches at Sydney International Airport in 2009.

“The Transport Workers Union, representing thousands of workers at Australia’s airports, has been raising safety issues at the airports since before the 2001 terrorism attacks in the United States,” Mr Sheldon said.

“Today we will be talking about how the use of Airport Security Identification Cards must strike a balance between the need to protect society, and providing transparent mechanisms to employees, including the right to appeal.

“The TWU will also be calling for the introduction of ASIC-style clearances for workers on Department of Defence removalist contracts to ensure the safety of our defence force personnel, and their families,” Mr Sheldon said.

The Hearing will take place at Clifton Suites, Level 6, 190 George Street, Sydney.
