Truck drivers across Australia, with the support of their union the TWU, will be holding national protests against Coles (and their parent company Wesfarmers) to demand that Coles step up and take responsibility for the safety risks and unfair contracting practices within their retail supply chain. Thousands and thousands of drivers work each day to deliver goods to Coles stores, but Coles thinks by contracting these practices out they can wipe their hands clean of the wages, conditions, pressures and the safety of these drivers. We need to show this isn’t the case.
Every year 330 people die on Australian roads as a result of truck related accidents. Coles need to step up and work with the union and drivers to start drastically reforming their industry and their practices that are rife in their supply chain. Drivers report having to overload trucks, speed, miss sleep and skip truck repairs because they can’t afford it and their deadlines are so tight. Meanwhile Wesfarmers has made a profit of over $2 billion in the last year. This has to stop.
On Thursday 12 November Coles (Wesfarmers) will be holding their AGM at the Perth Convention Centre. TWU members will be staging a quick, punchy protest ahead the delegation entering the event to ask questions of the Wesfarmers Board. It will be great if you could lend your voice to make sure the message is received loud and clear.
We will be meeting at 11:45 at the upstairs grass area just outside the state entrance.
See you there!
