The latest violent incident, at Burleigh Heads about 6pm on Wednesday, has prompted unions to call for courts to place assaults on bus drivers in the same category as assaults on police.

The driver stopped the bus and left the vehicle after initially being verbally abused by the teen, who had boarded at Southport.

The teen followed the driver and punched him in the face.

Southern Investigative Group Detective Inspector Brian Swan said police had interviewed a 16-year-old but no one had been charged.

It was the latest in a spate of violent attacks on Gold Coast bus drivers since January.

The Transport Workers Union said the constant attacks were affecting the mental state of drivers and they had continued to push for harsher penalties against offenders.
