ACCC airline decision welcomed by Union

Release date: 23/09/2010

The Transport Workers Union is supporting a move that would see an alliance between Virgin Blue and Middle-East carrier Etihad, which would see Virgin airlines selling flights to Abu Dhabi from October 1.

Transport Workers Union national airline official, Scott Connolly, said the Union welcomed the decision in the interest of protecting jobs in the Australian airline industry.

“Having welcomed the decision, the TWU will also be seeking guarantees from both operators that they will be abide by best practice standards and conditions in Australia and across our regions,” Mr Connolly said.

“That means that all workers in the supply chain should have access to proper wages and conditions, and be able to collectively organise and negotiate their workplace agreements.

“We will also be calling on government authorities to conduct a review of wages, conditions, workplace standards and workplace security and safety to ensure that best practice applies across all operations.

“Regulators need to ensure people on Australian flights are paid Australian wages. We do not want to see people paid a sub standard wage on local work,” Mr Connolly said.
