Preparing for a Fight: Toll Delegates Fired Up for Upcoming Bargaining Campaign

TWU NEWS, 13 March 2017

Toll delegates from every State and Territory showed company representatives they are ready for a tough battle at a pre-bargaining meeting held in Sydney.

The company tried to cry poor, saying it would be resistant to the union’s demands for fair conditions and job security. But union delegates made it clear that workers at Toll would not be punished for management incompetence and would be prepared to take action if given no choice.

“They’ve made some bad management decisions and we’re not going to suffer the consequences of it,” Queensland delegate Ian Buckingham said.

“We’ve taken your concerns to Toll management, they haven’t been listening to us so far but they will…we’re going to have to get ready to take action and we’re going to have to do it together,” Northern Territory delegate Barry Norton said.

It is important that all members recognise that what happens in this agreement will have implications throughout the whole transport industry. Further meetings will be held later in March and then each month up to June. Yard and State delegates meeting will happen after every negotiation to ensure all members have a say in what is fought for at the bargaining table.

“We need to stick together as a union and as a transport industry and fight for what is fair. Make no mistake, this is going to be a tough one,” WA delegate Charlie Nichols said.

“This will be a long, hard battle. We need to stand together across the nation and be prepared to fight back against any attack,” NSW delegate Margaret Harvey said.

“We’re in this for the long haul, this is going to be a fight and we need to stick together as members and we’ll get through,” Victorian delegate John Rowe said.

National Assistant Secretary Michael Kaine congratulated delegates on the tough stance they took during the meeting with Toll management, adding that Toll now knows it will have a real battle on its hands.
